Oscars 2019: Who Will Win vs Who Should Win
The Academy Awards are only hours away, and speculation is rampant as to who will take out the coveted trophies.
Here at Fantastic Fools, we decided to go through all of the major categories and pick the most likely winners, and the folks who will be unfortunately shafted.
Best Supporting Actor
Nominations: Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman), Sam Elliot (A Star Is Born), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Sam Rockwell (Vice)
Will Win: Mahershala Ali (Green Book)
After taking out the Golden Globe, Ali is a warm favourite to collect his second Academy Award for his performance in Green Book. The film itself is not without controversy, but Ali’s role has drawn nothing but acclaim.
Should Win: Ben Miller (Johnny English Strikes Again)
For his role as Angus “Jeremy” Bough, Ben Miller absolutely stole the show in the third installment of the beloved Johnny English franchise. He delivered a deep and rich performance that truly stands among the greats in modern cinema history.
Best Supporting Actress
Nominations: Amy Adams (Vice), Marina de Tavira (Roma), Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk), Emma Stone (The Favourite), Rachel Weisz (The Favourite).
Will Win: Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk)
With The Favourite girls Stone and Weiz likely to cancel each other out, Regina King looks likely to sweep in and claim her first Oscar for her fantastic performance in the touching drama If Beale Street Could Talk.
Should Win: Emma Thompson (Johnny English Strikes Again)
Beloved British Actress Emma Thompson already has two Oscars and a cavalcade of fantastic and memorable performances under her belt. However, none come close to her magnificent supporting role in spy drama Johnny English Strikes Again. Thompson brings a quiet gravitas to a role which could have been thankless in the hands of a lesser actress.
Thompson should win her third Oscar for the role.
Nominations: Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Glenn Close (The Wife), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Lady Gaga (A Star is Born), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)
Will Win: Olivia Colman (The Favourite)
She’ll receive a strong challenge from Glenn Close, but Olivia Colman is likely to take out the award for her portrayal of Queen Anne. Colman has come a long way since Peep Show and continues to build a fabolous profile of great roles. Well deserved, but maybe not so much as…
Should Win: Olga Kurylenko (Johnny English Strikes Again)
Olga, if you’re reading this, I just wanted to say that I’m a big fan of your work. I wish you the best of luck with all of your future endeavors.
Please respond to the letters I wrote you.
Nominations: Christian Bale (Vice), Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Viggo Mortensen (Green Book)
Will Win: Christian Bale (Vice)
To be honest, I just don’t want to even imagine a world where Bohemian Rhapsody wins an Oscar. Christian Bale does great work in the role of Dick Cheney, and did the thing where he eats a lot of food or whatever.
However, he’s not a patch on…
Should Win: Rowan Atkinson (Johnny English Strikes Again)
Atkinson is the heart and soul of the Johnny English franchise, and does career-defining work as the lead character in the heartfelt drama. After being snubbed for great turns in Johnny English and Johnny English Reborn, the time is now for Atkinson to finally be recognized by the academy for the defining role of our generation.
Nominations: Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born, Vice
Will Win: Roma
In what could well be a historic year for the Oscars, Netflix is coming in as favourite for Best Picture. Roma seems to be the most unusual Best Picture favourite ever, as both a Netflix film and a foreign language one.
However, in a year when every film nominated has some kind of fatal flaw, be it genre (Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman), controversy (Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody), or poor reviews (Bohemian Rhapsody), Roma could very well Steven-Bradbury-it into the win.
Should Win: Tag
